Week 7 Trophy Update

The Trophy Holding Washington Huskies had a bye week last week and will face Oregon this Saturday with The jimPossible-sarcasMike Trophy on the line once again.

  • Washington started this run with the Trophy by knocking off the Ducks last November 37-34
  • UW is seeking it's 9th straight win - this is already their longest run with the Trophy
  • The Huskies are 36-23 in Trophy games and this is their 11th time as Trophy-holder
  • Oregon has only been the Trophy-holder that one time and has an overall record of 7-18-1
  • The PNW teams have met 4 times in Trophy games with UW winning each time

It seems likely The Trophy will end the regular season in the PAC-12.

Washington breaks Oregon's Trophy streak

Washington knocked off Oregon 37-34 on Saturday ending the Ducks reign as holders of the jiMpossible-sarcasMike Trophy

Oregon had run off 6 wins after taking the Trophy from BYU back in September.

  • Oregon improved their Trophy game record from 0-17-1 to now 7-18-1
  • Washington has now won the Trophy 11 times and has an overall Trophy game record of 28-23
  • The Huskies ended a Trophy drought dating back to September of 1997
  • Washington had lost 8 straight Trophy games before their win over the Ducks
  • The Huskies longest streak as trophy holder is 6 wins after defeating a Jim Harbaugh quarterbacked Michigan team in 1984

Washington hosts Colorado (3-6 in trophy games, 2 time trophy holder) this week before traveling to Wazoo (7-13-1, 2-time Trophy winner) for the Apple Cup to close out the regular season. I did a quick look at the Pac-12 tie breaker rules and I think it is unlikely, but not impossible that the Huskies can make the Championship game. So the chance for a B1G team to play for the Trophy in Pasadena is still alive.

  • Washington is 2-1 facing the Wolverines and 0-3 against Ohio State in Trophy games,
  • They have not faced any other B1G teams in Trophy games

Trophy Update - First time champ Oregon Ducks

In their 19th try the Oregon Ducks finally won the jiMpossible-sarcasMike Trophy

  • The Ducks are now 1-17-1 in Trophy games and they travel to Pullman to face Wazzoo this Saturday.
  • The Cougars are 7-12-1 in Trophy games and have won the trophy on 2 occasions
  • They rattled off 4 wins after defeating Oregon State for the Trophy in October of 1941 before losing to Texas A&M on the Saturday before Pearl Harbor was attacked
  • And their most recent Trophy Holding was in 1983 with an Apple Cup victory followed by a win to open the 1983 season before losing to Michigan!
  • They've only had 3 opportunities since that loss, falling UCLA in 1993 and USC during the Trojans long run in 2004-2005
  • Of teams that have won the Trophy, only Rutgers has a poorer winning percentage than the Ducks
  • The Scarlett Knights are 1-22 in Trophy games - having only won the very first Match-up!

Trophy Update - BYU secures the Trophy in OT win over Baylor

BYU held on in overtime to defeat Baylor and win the jiMpossible-sarcasMike trophy for the first time since 1997.

This marks the Cougars 3rd time with the Trophy.

  • They defeated Colorado State in September of 1995, only to lose to Arizona State the next week.
  • Their second run started with a win over Tulsa in 1996. They rattled off 7 more wins - including the WAC championship and the Cotton Bowl over Kansas State before losing the 1997 season opener to Washington.
  • Prior to Saturday the Cougars had not even played for the Trophy since their 2004 loss to USC.
  • BYU has an overall record of 10-5 in Trophy battles
  • The Cougars are the first Independent school to have the Trophy since Notre Dame in 1990
  • BYU travels to Oregon next week, the Ducks are 0-17-1 in games for the Trophy
  • If the Ducks win the will be the 102nd Trophy-holder and the first first-timer since Kansas State in October of 2012.
  • While looking up first time winners - I noticed the 1957 Maryland - UNC game was a Trophy game. This is the game the recently deceased Queen Elizabeth attended while visiting the US.
